About the Superintendent

Dr. Brian Markarian proudly serves as the Superintendent of the Hawthorne School District and actively works to implement its mission of ensuring that every student achieves educational excellence and social and emotional well-being.  

Over the course of more than two decades of service in the HSD, he has supported its students, staff, and families as a classroom teacher, school administrator, and district administrator in both the Educational Services Department and the Human Resources Department. Dr. Markarian has served as the President of Region 14 of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) and had the honor of being named California’s Curriculum and Instruction Administrator of the Year in 2015. He was also named Superintendent of the Year for ACSA Region 14 in 2024.

Dr. Markarian earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Stonehill College, a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership from California State University, Northridge (CSUN), and an Educational Doctorate degree from the University of Southern California (USC).
