Eligibility
Kindergarten enrollment
Child must turn 5 on or before September 1, 2023
Transitional Kindergarten enrollment
Child must turn 5 between September 2, 2023 and April 2, 2024
Enrollment Requirements
To enroll in our district, families will need to provide documentation of identity, immunizations, examinations and assessments, and other areas. Click here to learn more about the materials you will need to provide during the enrollment process.

Your address of residence determines which school you are zoned to enroll in within the Hawthorne School District. If you’re not sure which school you are zoned for, follow this link to locate your school.
How to Enroll in TK/Kindergarten
Your student is considered a "new" student for the 2023-24 school year if:

They were not enrolled in an HSD school during the 2022-23 school year, OR
-
They are transitioning from a Non-HSD preschool to transitional kinder (TK) or kindergarten.
If your student was previously enrolled in HSD and not currently attending a school in the Hawthorne School District, your student is not classified as a New Student. Please visit your local school site office to complete the enrollment process.
New student enrollment process:

Complete the information on the Request for Enrollment via PowerSchool here.

After completing the request for enrollment, parents/caretakers will receive two emails, one that informs that the request was received and second, instructions to create a Parent Powerschool Account.
Once you create a PowerSchool account, you will need to complete and submit the Enrollment Forms in PowerSchool. For assistance, refer to our Powerschool guide here, or contact your home school directly. Click here to view the directory of elementary or middle schools.

- You will receive a letter from your student’s preschool teacher.

With the information from the letter, you will create a Parent Powerschool Account in Powerschool and complete the enrollment forms on Powerschool, under the “Forms” tab. Download and print an Enrollment Packet. Send the completed Enrollment Packet to your child’s school of residence (Locate My School) If you are unable to download and print the Enrollment Packet, please contact your child's school of residence.
Permits allow families to enroll their student in a district or school of choice, subject to approval and specific conditions. If you need assistance with the permit process, please give us a call at 310-263-3935 for assistance. We are happy to help!

The Hawthorne School District enrolls students whose parent or legal guardian resides within school district boundaries (Education Code 48200). Residence verification is a parent's responsibility, and falsification of information will be grounds for immediate cancellation of enrollment.
To verify residence, specific documents must be presented. Click here to view the full list of required documents, or refer to the question below. All documents must show the name and address of the parent or legal guardian residing within the school district (Education Code 48204.1).
We welcome all new students. In order to enroll your child, you must have the following documents:

Proof of Age: Birth Certificate, Affidavit of Birth, Baptismal Certificate

Current Immunization Records (see immunization requirements here)

For grades 1-8, you will need transfer documents or report card from previous school with birth date listed

If student is in any Special Education program (RSP, SDC, and Speech), parent/guardian must provide a current signed IEP

Physical Examination Record for 1st graders. Must have a doctor's signature and stamp

Oral Health Assessment (dental screening) for new enrolling Kindergartners or 1st graders. Oral Health Assessment must be completed by May 31st during the first year of enrollment
