Creating Conditions to Help HSD Students and Families Thrive
At the Hawthorne School District, we're embarking on a transformative initiative designed to champion equity and educational excellence for every child. We do this through the Community Schools initiative—a strategic endeavor to use the collective power of families and the broader community. By forging strong partnerships and bringing additional resources right to our community, we are deeply committed to creating a nurturing environment where both students and families can flourish together.

What Are Community Schools?
Community Schools are public schools that partner with families and community members to create the conditions necessary for students to flourish. Our approach is grounded in four key pillars:

Integrated Support Services
By partnering with social and health services, we address out-of-school barriers to learning, ensuring every student is ready and able to learn.

Expanded Learning Time and Opportunities
Before and after school, weekend, and summer programs provide additional academic instruction, enrichment activities, and real-world learning experiences.

Family and Community Engagement
We strive to make our school a hub for neighborhood learning, bringing families into schools as educational partners to foster a sense of belonging and shared responsibility.

Collaborative Leadership and Practices
Building a culture of professional learning, trust, and shared responsibility among all educational partners is vital to our success.
The Power of Community Schools
Our Community Schools strategy is not one-size-fits-all. Each school tailors its approach based on the unique needs of its community, ensuring that the transformative power of these schools is fully realized. By integrating academic, health, and social services, and engaging deeply with families and the community, we aim to improve academic performance, school climate, and decrease chronic absenteeism.
