HMSA Softball

Softball Team

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Lady A's softball at HMSA and with a sense of destiny that has attached itself to this team, it became a Cinderella season for the 2016 edition of the Lady A's Softball Club. The team lost 7 senior starters from last year's 13-10 squad so this year was originally slated to be a rebuilding year with up and coming juniors and sophomores from last year's team growing into the open starting varsity positions. With just one returning senior, we didn't expect to go too far this year. However, the Good Fairy watching out over our Lady A's turned the team from a pumpkin into a team with huge potential. The girls worked hard through their fall and winter ball seasons, learning the game, the strategy, the tactics and the skill sets required to be successful. The new Varsity A's emerged from the pack and the rest became the Baby A's Junior Varsity team by this February.

The season started off March 1st as expected. We would win one, lose one, win one, lose one. As the girls gelled as a team through this process, catcherthey started to win consistently under the leadership of our lone returning senior, Gigi "The Wall" Gutierrez. The A's won every regular season game they played since March 8th with the exception of losing twice to perennial Southern Section Champions Rolling Hills Prep. Until their play-off loss to Avalon on May 19th, the A's put together an impressive 13 win, 2 Loss record. The girls put together a 9-game win streak in that stretch plus a 1st round play-off win. They finished the regular season with a 13 and 5 won/loss mark and went 1 and 1 in the playoffs, defeating Oakwood 20-2 then dropping a heartbreaker, 5-3 to Avalon. The Lady A's finished their overall season with best-ever mark of 14 wins and 6 losses. As their coach, I take great pride in their dedication, hard work, competitive spirit, desire to learn the game and most importantly to learn how to love the game, from the life lessons competitive sports teach and what it means to be a Lady A. Once you put on the royal blue, you are a Lady A through and through! Lady A's fever, CATCH IT! Goooooooooooo.....A's, YOU KNOW!!
